“Exchange for Sustainable Development” (ESD) is an exchange programme for young people (aged 22-35) wanting to live and work in another country for 12-17 months. Each year, six to eight participants travel from Norway to work with one of our partners in the South, and a similar number comes from our South partners to work in Norway.

Three Norwegian organisations are responsible for the program (the Development Fund, Noragric and Bioforsk), and for organising the exchange with their South partners in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nepal, Malawi and Uganda.

Primary aim of the project

The programme “Exchange for Sustainable Development” (ESD) is based on staff exchange between partners in the North and in the South. The ultimate purpose is improved food security. The programme aspires to strengthen the development of sustainable agriculture, natural resource management and preserve the biodiversity.

Anticipated results

The goals of the ESD-programme are to:
  • increase the cultural and professional knowledge by both participants and partners,
  • strengthen the organisational structure and capabilities of the partners,
  • create a mutual understanding and solidarity between farmers in the North and the South,
  • contribute to spin-offs in terms of new collaborations, projects, ideas and ways of communication,
  • develop policies and strategies based on concrete experiences in the field.

Fredskorpset

The ESD Programme is fully supported by the Norwegian Fredskorpset. The participants are therefore called Fredskorpset Participants and the programme follows Fredkorpset regulations. The full responsibility for the exchange is, on the other hand, held by the ESD North and South Partner Organisations.
